How this calculation works
Where the allowance actually goes
Not on breakages. Most of it goes on cuts: every edge, every corner and every pipe leaves an offcut that is not usable elsewhere. That is why a small bathroom needs a bigger percentage than a large open floor, even though it uses fewer tiles.
Keep the spares
A box left with the customer is worth more than the money back. When a tile cracks in year three, a matching replacement is the difference between one tile and a whole wall.

How much allowance should I take?
Five per cent on a straight layout in a simple room. Ten per cent with a diagonal, a herringbone, a lot of corners or a large-format tile. If in doubt take the higher one: the box you did not open costs less than the second trip.
Does the adhesive figure include the floor levelling?
No. Levelling compound and primer are separate, and on an uneven floor they are usually the bigger cost.
What about grout?
Grout depends on the joint width and the tile size and is not in this calculation. The bag will tell you the coverage.
