Most underpricing is invisible
A job that loses money rarely announces it. The quote looked fine, the customer paid, and the hours it swallowed are not written down anywhere you would notice. You find out at the year-end that a profitable-looking year was not, and by then you cannot say which jobs did it.
The comparison that fixes this is small: priced hours against worked hours, priced materials against bought materials, per job. It only exists if both halves are recorded in the same place.
Building the price
Your own rates
Labour rates and material prices kept in one list, so a quote is not assembled from memory.
Assemblies you reuse
The bits of work you price over and over, saved once and dropped into the next quote.
Provisional sums with a figure
Stated as provisional, with the note that they are measured on completion. That line prevents most arguments.
Margin where you can see it
Cost and sell kept apart, so a discount is a decision rather than a surprise.
Afterwards is where it pays
When the job is done, the estimate is still there next to the actual hours, materials and variations. Do that for a season and you stop guessing about which work is worth quoting for.

Does it come with a price book?
No — you bring your own, from a spreadsheet. That is usually the better list anyway, because it carries your account prices rather than list prices.
Can I import prices from my merchant?
If your merchant gives you an export — and most trade accounts do — it comes in the same way as your own list, as CSV or Excel.
Does it handle retentions and stage payments?
Stage payments and a retention line, yes. Formal applications for payment and valuations under the Construction Act, no — that is ERP territory and we would rather say so than half-build it.
What VAT rate goes on an estimate?
The rate sits on the line. Standard is 20%, reduced 5%, and supply and installation of energy-saving materials in homes is zero rated until 31 March 2027, then 5% (HMRC VAT Notice 708/6).
