Photograph what disappears
Pipe runs before the floor goes down, cable routes before plastering, the position of a valve about to sit behind a panel. Three years later somebody is drilling, and that photograph is worth more than everything else on the sheet. Attached to the property, it is still findable.
No signal is the normal case
Basements, plant rooms, steel frames and half-built houses are where this work happens. Hours, photos and signatures are stored on the device and sent as soon as there is a connection — the engineer does not have to know or care which state it is in.
Subcontractors record the same way
On site much of the labour is subcontracted, and that is where costing usually breaks: hours by text message, materials on somebody else's account, a sheet that never arrives. If subcontractors record against the job the way an employee does, the job can be costed and the labour and materials stay split — which matters when a CIS deduction is applied.

What about CIS on subcontracted labour?
Keeping labour and materials split from the point of recording is what makes a CIS invoice come out right. The rate is 20% for a registered subcontractor, 30% if you could not verify them and 0% with gross payment status — on the labour element only.
